The bookseller Friedrich Keller receives a manuscript of poems from a disheveled stranger. Keller, a neurotic loner and passionate connoisseur of poetry, begins to read the manuscript one day and soon discovers that he is holding a masterpiece. Some time later, he recognizes the man on the street and spontaneously follows him into the rough world of a bar frequented by drunks and prostitutes, where he seeks a conversation with the genius. This encounter shakes his world. When the poet unexpectedly shows up at Keller's home one day, everything falls apart completely. What has happened? Steven Uhly plays with the interplay of fiction and truth in such a sophisticated way that it is impossible to determine whether "To the Blind Gods" is a crime novel, a burlesque, or a hermeneutic interpretation.
