When I was an 18-year-old nursing student, I began to dream of a world free from illness, pain, and tears. I never spoke about these thoughts; they seemed absurd in light of the horrors and tragedies around me. By the age of 25, these fantasies had turned into an intense hope, and 10 years later, I was certain that I was living to see this dream come true. Long ago, I had given up the idea that science and medicine could solve the problem of human suffering. That path seemed to only worsen the situation. I engaged deeply and extensively with religion and eventually discovered that its doctrines and teachings only provided reasons for evil. In the end, when I rejected the God presented by religion, I sought answers by simply following where my passion led me.
