When asked about philosophers, numerous names immediately come to mind: Socrates, Plato, Kant, Schopenhauer, Nietzsche, Sartre, and countless others. However, when asked about female philosophers, the responses often dwindle - if they exist at all - to Hannah Arendt and Simone de Beauvoir. Yet, in every era, there have been women who philosophized, who were thought leaders and brought about change. For example, the revolutionary thinker of equality Olympe de Gouge, Dorothea Schlözer, the first female doctor of philosophy in Germany, Mary W. Calkins, who engaged with the philosophy of the self, Christina of Sweden, who described sensory impressions as the basis of knowledge, or Martha Nussbaum, who addresses issues of justice and inclusion. The philosophical questions posed by important female thinkers are generally relatable and enabling.
