Grimmelshausen (1622-1676), who began his writing career under various pseudonyms, presented his main work with the novel in five books "The Adventurous Simplicissimus" in 1668. This work, which is considered one of the most significant literary documents of the Baroque period, incorporates a range of sources. For example, he followed the tradition of the Spanish picaresque novel and used motifs from Eschenbach's "Parzifal" as well as from popular comic and legend literature. The story of the "Simpleton," who embarks on the adventure of a world journey and ultimately renounces the world as a hermit, has remained a subject of controversial interpretations to this day due to its complex narrative structure, its yet-to-be-fully-deciphered compositional principle, and its thematic ambiguity.
