Bremer Freiheit is a Moritat about the unfreedom of women. Fassbinder transforms the historical case of the poisoner Geesche Gottfried into a vivid scenic tableau. From passive suffering emerges murderous activity. The act of poisoning becomes an act of liberation: from the brutal, domineering husband, from intrusive relatives, from love and business partners. In Blood on the Cat's Neck, Fassbinder develops a critical compendium of phrases and life lies that reflects our society. At the center is the comic character Phoebe Zeitgeist, who has come to Earth from a distant star – and ultimately reveals herself to be a deadly vampire.
