Manhattan Medea lives in present-day New York: Medea and Jason are illegal immigrants living underground until Jason meets the daughter of a wealthy businessman. He leaves Medea and their child to marry the other woman. The play takes place on the wedding night. Medea waits outside the bride's house, determined to win Jason back. The central motif in Bluebeard - Hope of Women is that Bluebeard kills what he loves. However, in Dea Loher's drama, the murdered women are just as involved in their fate as the murderer himself. They are in search of a love 'beyond the masses,' one for which they would die. Thus, it is a form of redemption when they find in death what they seek with Bluebeard. Dea Loher comes quite close to the hell that leads to perfect love. Loher can encapsulate such soulful activity in dialogues that are among the most pointedly written for German theater.
