Above all, the continuous breaks in meaning evoke a surprising anarchic wit, a humor that repeatedly reveals metaphysical abysses. Bayer's slim yet consequential dramatic oeuvre—many later authors, not least Peter Handke, were strongly influenced by it—is characterized by black humor and surrealist montage techniques. With his sometimes extremely short plays, which often tread the line of nonsense and address the lurking everyday horror beneath the surface, Bayer created a new theatrical genre.
