Product details

'Bang-Bang Paparazzi' was the name given to the Johannesburg photographer group led by Kevin Carter, Greg Marinovich, Ken Oosterbroek, and João Silva by the South African lifestyle magazine Living in 1992. Bang-Bang, because the four were always on the scene with their cameras during the years 1990 to 1994, the years between the end of apartheid and the first free elections at the Cape, when the conflicts between the ANC and the Inkatha Freedom Party violently escalated. Bang-Bang also reflects the sound of gunfire amidst which the photographers captured their images. Of the four founders who called themselves the Bang-Bang Club, only two are still alive. Oosterbroek was killed in 1994 in a hail of bullets, while Marinovich was seriously injured. Carter, who received the Pulitzer Prize at that time, took his own life a quarter of a year later. Marinovich also received the Pulitzer.
