The aim of this work is to explore the guiding perspectives of Böll's understanding of guilt, taking into account the hermeneutic difference between intention and understanding. It seeks to illustrate the multifaceted and complex literary depiction of guilt by Böll through production aesthetic and structural analytical viewpoints. By addressing current issues of his time across various motifs and themes, accentuating guilt situations and their details particularly through stylistic devices of exaggeration and repetition, and narrating less from a psychological perspective but rather through characters in whom events unfold, Böll's work reflects a diverse catalog of guilt and innocence that documents the encompassing nature of life within the everyday and the provincial. Furthermore, writing about contexts of guilt provided Böll with the opportunity to process personal guilt and distress against his own tendencies to repress, serving as an individual act of self-liberation as well as an act of resistance against realized offenses and objectionable conditions that were not confronted during the Nazi era.
