The Letter to the Galatians aims to address a conflict. New missionaries are propagating that one must be circumcised to be counted among the people of God. In response, Paul asserts that through Jesus Christ, the Son of Abraham and God, and his sacrifice on the cross, those who belong to him are children of Abraham and also children of God, free from the law. The gospel as freedom from the biblical-Jewish law has often made history with anti-Jewish undertones. However, Paul also represents a much broader understanding of the Bible of Israel in the Letter to the Galatians. Based on this, he articulates that being bound to Jesus Christ means liberation to a new life. In hermeneutical reflections and in a longer concluding section, the commentary engages in a harmonious and critical dialogue with the Pauline gospel.
