Earlier dams, with the exception of the log dams, are little known, but the dams built by German dam builders in the Middle Ages testify to an artistic and still respected stable construction method, as modern technology cannot be applied in the same way. Most of the work was done by primitive hand labor, similar to practices still found in colonial regions and in India today, where vulnerable labor forces are employed. In the past, due to inadequate geotechnical knowledge of construction materials, any technical machine use left much to be desired, and the solidification was left to the factor of time. Among the areas of construction that have undergone comprehensive scientific and technical penetration and research in recent decades, dam construction undoubtedly stands out as a significant subfield of the broader earth, road, and water construction.
