Product details

Films are generally regarded primarily as a medium of entertainment. However, a look into film history also shows that they have always been used as a political weapon. This was particularly true during the Cold War, when the two opposing blocs engaged not only in an ideological conflict but also in a visually rich one. Thus, film was a popular medium in the German-German competition of systems to demonstrate the superiority of one's own order. It was intended to ideologically influence the collective imagination and serve as an indicator of technological and industrial power on both sides of the Iron Curtain. Therefore, film not only reflected the ideological clash but also fueled it. A characteristic feature of German cinema during the Cold War was the interdependence of film productions in the two German states. A unique aspect in this regard was the motif of the frontline state, as filmmakers repeatedly addressed the Wall and barbed wire, thus participating in the construction of an image of the border that still shapes memory today. This volume offers a multifaceted insight into the forms and functions, contents, and reception of German film during the Cold War.
