Thesis from 2015 in the field of Linguistics / Language Research (interdisciplinary), grade: 1.3, University of Leipzig (Institute for Applied Linguistics and Translation Studies), course: Text Analysis Spanish - Focus on Law, language: German.
Abstract: This paper for the seminar on Text Analysis with a focus on Law analyzes a German penal order based on various criteria. The aim of this text analysis is to highlight the different interpretative possibilities of its function and, in particular, to emphasize the characteristics of this text type. This analysis is especially relevant for translators or possibly interpreters who have to work with such or similar texts. Legal texts, in particular, provide a good starting point for explaining how to approach a text analysis due to their specific features.
I chose this example because the incident attracted a lot of attention at the time and, although it took place in Bavaria, it also made it into the local press in my home state of Saxony-Anhalt. However, I must note that I only have three of the four pages of the document, and therefore my analysis can only refer to these. At the beginning of the paper, the text example is classified into a text type and a text genre, and then briefly introduced and integrated into the legal context. In the main part, the example text is examined in detail according to the text analysis criteria of Christiane Nord (2009). Finally, the effect resulting from the interplay of the preceding criteria is described. It should be made clear that the interpretation and application of the analysis criteria are partly based on personal experiences and interpretations, thus allowing room for variations.
