The Naumburg Cathedral of St. Peter and Paul is one of the most famous German buildings of the Middle Ages and is the most visited destination along the Romanesque Road. The cathedral, built during the transition from late Romanesque to early Gothic in the first half of the 13th century, is set within an outstanding architectural ensemble of medieval and early modern canon courts in the cathedral precinct, as well as elaborately designed townhouses of the adjacent council city. Before 1250, the main work of a team of sculptors and stone masons from France, led by the Naumburg Master, was created here. This master holds a prominent position within the European cathedral architecture of early Gothic, with his journey taking him through Île de France, Champagne, Picardy, and on to Mainz, Naumburg, and Meissen. Even 800 years later, visitors remain fascinated.
