Product details

In the Middle Ages, the most common blue dye for textiles was woad, which was at the center of an extensive trade. The city of Erfurt was primarily the starting point for this export, as the plant thrived particularly well in its surroundings. This work draws conclusions about the extent of the trade and the sales markets based on a comparative analysis of the quantities of woad recorded at various escort stations. At the same time, it allows for the identification of the transporters involved in the trade along with their places of origin. Additionally, numerous business relationships between the merchants of Erfurt and traders from the sales locations are examined in detail. The discussion is rounded off with an overview of the political and social status of the woad merchants in Erfurt.
