This first German edition of the philosophical autobiography of al-Ghazali (1059-1111) is particularly suitable for providing an original access to the classical sources of Arab philosophy. On one hand, al-Ghazali reveals the thought process that led him to counter the adaptation of the fundamental teachings of Greek philosophy in his well-known refutation of the philosophers. On the other hand, the translation, crafted by an Arab religious philosopher from the original texts, is especially careful to avoid the risk of transferring Arabic thought into a supposedly correspondingly meaningful German text, which would in fact only align with a traditional Western framework of thought. It becomes evident that the common classification of al-Ghazali among the dogmatic representatives of a "orthodox" defense of the Quran does not withstand scrutiny.
