A central theme in family business research is the effect of family influence on a company. This conceptual work provides the foundation for a theoretical approach that treats the previously one-dimensional view of family influence on a company as a multidimensional construct. The dimensions are analyzed and combined in a model based on the Resource-Based View. Considering both the strength and the nature of family influence offers an explanatory approach for the existing heterogeneity within the group of family businesses. Thus, the work highlights the relevance of the multidimensionality of family influence on companies for both science and practice.
