The author and royal garden inspector Karl Friedrich Eduard Lucas (1816-1882) provides in this volume a detailed guide for farmers, gardeners, and gardening enthusiasts on vegetable cultivation in gardens and fields. Typical for field vegetable cultivation is the usually single annual use of the cultivation area for vegetable growing, along with a regular crop rotation of the vegetable culture with other agricultural crops. After soil preparation, which results in a loose, weed-free, pre-fertilized, plant- or seed-ready tilth, the vegetables to be grown are either sown directly or planted as pre-cultivated young plants. Characteristic of the horticultural cultivation of vegetables in open fields is the intensive use of the cultivation areas with two to four crops in a year (for example, the crop rotation of savoy cabbage - head lettuce - cauliflower from mid-March to early October).
