In 1984, Hans Jonas delivered a commemorative speech titled "The Concept of God after Auschwitz" to thank the Protestant-Theological Faculty of Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen for awarding him the Dr. Leopold Lucas Prize. This award recognized his extensive scholarship as well as the integrity and urgency of his efforts to rationally explain to people in a vulnerable time the necessity of an ethics of responsibility and to seek understanding and consensus.
