The harbor is the lifeblood of Hamburg, having always shaped the character of the city as a trading hub and its self-image as a cosmopolitan metropolis. It has early on exposed the residents of Hamburg to foreign customs and exotic goods, determined the rhythm of their work, and has always been a place of longing for a better life in distant lands. The photo book "The Harbor" showcases this central location in Hamburg's history and present from a unique perspective. It allows us to see the harbor through the eyes of four of the most significant harbor photographers of the 20th century, going far beyond a mere historical photographic documentation.
