I am learning to play the piano. This sentence marks the beginning of the recordings on September 22, in which the first-person narrator documents this endeavor over three months in Hanna Johansen's new book "The Autumn in Which I Learned to Play the Piano." It takes her deep into her childhood in Northern Germany and back to the present, to gardening in the autumn, to the interplay of stability and the loss of abilities and strengths, and to the question of home. How did the child she once was learn the important things for life? How does learning change as one grows older? These questions preoccupy the writer.
