Guardini's reflections on the figure of Jesus Christ are rightly regarded as a classic work of spiritual theology. Since its publication in 1937, it has accompanied and shaped theologians, pastors, and a large number of active Christians, remaining standard literature to this day. Guardini carefully traces the figure of Jesus Christ as presented in the Gospels and points to the mystery of his person without attempting to resolve it. Historical-critical exegesis has since uncovered much new detailed knowledge. However, Guardini's reflections reach into that realm which begins beyond what exegetical methods can achieve. Against the backdrop of contemporary debates about images of Jesus in film and literature, Guardini's reflections are remarkably relevant.
