Product details

The witch hunts were one of the bloodiest episodes in European history. What prompted the killing of countless innocents, and what did the accusers rely on? The Malleus Maleficarum by Heinrich Kramer, published in 1486, is considered the unofficial manual for witch hunters. It offers a unique insight into the cruel machinations of the Inquisition. Despite the widespread use of the Malleus Maleficarum, it was never officially recognized by the Church or the State. The first part defines who must be considered a witch and for what reasons. The second part addresses magical practices and the differences between the sexes. The third part describes the laws and procedures in witch trials. Heinrich Kramer, also known as Heinrich Institoris, was a Dominican monk who lived from 1430 to 1505. The author of the Malleus Maleficarum made a name for himself as a witch theorist and inquisitor.
