The new pilgrimage route in Spain: Pilgrimage like Saint Ignatius in 1522. Recently, a new marked pilgrimage route has been established, stretching over 600 kilometers south of the Pyrenees from Loyola in the Basque Country to Manresa in the province of Barcelona. The pilgrimage follows the stages that Ignatius López de Loyola (1491-1556), the later founder of the Jesuit order, took after his life-changing experience in 1522. As he describes in detail in his autobiography "The Pilgrim's Report," he first visited the major pilgrimage site of Montserrat and then intended to board a ship to Jerusalem in Barcelona. However, a plague epidemic prevented him from continuing his pilgrimage in Manresa, making the town a central stop in his life and the Ignatius Cave in Manresa the destination of this new pilgrimage route.
