Product details

Who doesn't dream of life on a deserted island? Enno Janssen is the island warden of Memmert, a small island in the Wadden Sea between Borkum and Juist. In this book, Enno Janssen shares his solitary yet fulfilling life on the North Sea island and his exciting work as an island warden and bird caretaker. From early March to late October, he is the only person on the bird sanctuary island in the middle of the Wadden Sea. With a heavy heart, he returns to the mainland for the winter, as his love belongs to the untouched nature, the roar of the surf, and the fascinating birdlife of Memmert. Once the winter storms have passed, Enno Janssen packs his backpack and sets off from Norddeich in his small boat. It is his only connection to civilization, as the island can only be accessed by others in exceptional cases. There is no internet or email on the island, but there is a thatched-roof cottage where he lives as the island warden. His neighbors are the birds. Memmert is home to up to 80 breeding bird species, many of which are migratory birds that stop here to breed, which Enno Janssen diligently counts and observes. When the breeding season is long over and many of the birds have finally migrated south, Enno Janssen sets about winterizing the bird sanctuary and his small house. By the end of October, it is also time for him to return to the mainland and his family in his small motorboat.
