Harka now bears the warrior name Tokei-ihto and is the war chief of the Bear Clan. He knows that he must earn his recognition within the tribe anew every day, that he cannot afford to let up for a moment in his strength and attention. The uprising of the Dakota is spreading. Trusting the word of the military, Tokei-ihto goes as a negotiator to the fort at Niobrara. Despite the promise, he is captured. An attempt to rescue him fails, and his tribe believes him to be dead.
