The attempt to escape the horror. One morning, the sixteen-year-old high school student spontaneously decides to break free from his hated life on his way to school and secure an apprenticeship in the basement of a grocery store. In the basement, on the outskirts of the Salzburg Scherzhauserfeld settlement, the rundown, dreary residential ghetto of the dispossessed, the antisocial, and criminals, Bernhard meets all the outcasts of society, understands them, and takes a stand for these lost, troubled existences.
