More democracy! More participation! More personal responsibility! Today, there is hardly an area where such demands are not being made. Whether it is workers in companies, civil servants, or employees in the public sector, students at universities and colleges, or even the armed forces and churches—two institutions where thoughts of democratization were long absent—democratic participation and active involvement are now increasingly being demanded and, in some cases, already practiced. Therefore, it was only a logical consequence that this development would also manifest in one of the most important institutions of our society: in schools. In most state constitutions, schools are mandated not only to provide education and professional knowledge but also to promote students in the spirit of humanity.
