Product details

Even today, it seems like a miracle: Cologne Cathedral almost survived World War II unscathed – at least at first glance. Cologne was one of the main targets of the Allied bombers during the war, and by 1945, most of the city lay in ruins. The Cathedral, due to its location near the main train station and the Hohenzollern Bridge, was particularly at risk. In his book 'Cologne Cathedral in World War II', Niklas Möring tells the story of this iconic landmark in detail for the first time. He spans the timeline from the Nazis' rise to power in 1933 to the Cathedral's 700th anniversary in 1948. The volume, illustrated with partly unpublished photographs, showcases the immense efforts made to protect this unique architectural monument and its world-famous artistic treasures, as well as the significant damage the Cathedral suffered during the war.
