Jakob Christoph Heer (1859-1925) is considered one of the most successful representatives of the Swiss homeland novel. "The King of Bernina" is among the most well-known works of the widely read Swiss storyteller Heer, alongside the novels "By Holy Waters," "Joggeli," and "The Weather Watcher." The author's romantic vision, reminiscent in part of Ludwig Ganghofer, which focuses on morality in the bourgeois home, intertwines with an exciting plot and picturesque depictions of the Swiss Alpine world. The novel is further enriched by historical events, myths, legends, and fairy tales. It tells the tragic, unfulfilled love story between Markus Paltram, a hunter who embodies the strength of the mountains, and Cilgia Premont.
