The question of awareness regarding constructions of difference is a central theme in social work. Differentiated lifestyles and their push for recognition in the form of reduced discrimination and prejudice challenge social work to reflect on the construct of normality and its own role within a regulatory system. Social work finds itself in the dilemma of being, on one hand, an executing instance of societal norms and values as well as institutional and structural mandates, while on the other hand, having a responsibility towards the individuals who are the focus of social work. The book describes the existing framework conditions, emphasizes the relevance of awareness, examines constructs of normality and difference, and considers possible professional foundations in relation to the given context.
