Product details

Carl Gustav Carus (1789 - 1869), physician, natural philosopher, and landscape painter, is considered one of the most universal figures in German intellectual history. In Dresden, he met Caspar David Friedrich (1774 - 1840), who significantly promoted him as an artist. Friedrich also encouraged him to embark on a joint trip to Rügen in 1819, which took the two painters to locations such as Stubbenkammer, Quoltitz, and Arkona. The impressions of the still peaceful Baltic island at that time inspired Carus to create numerous small and large oil paintings, some of which still follow Friedrich's model, while others lean towards a more realistic depiction. In this volume, Herrmann Zschoche recounts the joint trip to Rügen and the creation of selected works by Carl Gustav Carus.
