Der grüne Baum des Lebens
German, Clara von Arnim, 2013Product details
In the midst of the Brandenburg landscape, the memoirs of Clara von Arnim unfold, who, after a sheltered childhood in Kaiserzeit Kassel and a carefree youth in 1920s Berlin, married a great-grandson of the famous poet couple Ludwig Achim and Bettine von Arnim, thus becoming a manor lady in the Mark. She tells captivatingly about the traces of her renowned ancestors as well as the everyday life of a decidedly non-feudal rural existence in a household without electric light and running water, about her family, and about her care for the estate's inhabitants against the backdrop of the rising dictatorship. In 1945, after the expropriation of her estate and the death of her husband, she does not give up: in the West, she bravely starts anew with her six children.
