The mechanical Christmas mountain from the Ore Mountains
German, 2015Product details
Christmas mountains are referred to as nativity landscapes with movable elements in the Ore Mountains, and this volume provides an overview of their history and distribution. Additionally, a mechanical Christmas mountain from Neuwürschnitz is presented, which depicts the life of Jesus in more than 20 scenes, from the Annunciation to Mary to the story of Emmaus. Currently displayed in the Museum of European Cultures, this nearly twelve-meter-long mountain, created around 1885 by the painter Max Vogel (1867-1943), is one of the few publicly accessible Christmas mountains outside of Saxony. Its history and reconstruction are documented here in a unique way in connection with the Ore Mountains' Christmas mountain tradition.
