Der letzte Mentsch
German, Alexander Schuller, Pierre-Henry Salfati, 2014Product details
To forget, Marcus Schwartz, who survived Auschwitz as a teenager, denied his Jewish roots for many years: he abandoned his name Menachem Teitelbaum, avoided any contact with Jews, and never visited a synagogue. But one day, the past unexpectedly catches up with him. While at a Jewish cemetery, Marcus feels the desire to be buried there – but he must prove that he is Jewish. This is an almost impossible task, as all his relatives and friends are dead. Thus, the eighty-year-old embarks on an adventurous and truly boundary-crossing road trip to his old homeland with Gül, a young German-Turkish woman he has befriended... A tragicomic story about an unusual, intergenerational friendship and the search for identity and home.
