Hans in Luck or The Man Without a Fatherland - this was the title of a lost novel manuscript by the 33-year-old Hans Bergel, which was confiscated by the Securitate during his arrest in Romania in 1959. Almost half a century later, Bergel revisits his life theme 'Transylvania as Destiny' in major novels: When the Eagles Come (1996) and The Return of the Wolves (2006). The political upheavals and ideological turmoil of the 20th century are reflected in the ethnically, linguistically, and religiously diverse multi-ethnic region of Southeast Europe like in a magnifying glass. The author presents Bergel's extensive work, comprising more than 40 volumes, against the backdrop of his biography. The background and consequences of Bergel's conviction in the Stalinist trial against five Romanian-German writers in 1959 are documented, as well as reports from the Romanian GULAG.
