For all their remarkably modern characters and stories, the narrative structures of the 10th and 11th centuries pose a reading challenge for many. Just as Gustav Schwab once did for the Greek myths, Tilman Spreckelsen has now taken on the task of presenting the grand tale of Grettir the Outlaw, the national saga of Njál, that of the brawling poet-hero Egil, and the story of Gudrun, torn between two men.
