Educational science places a very high value on space as a place and medium for the educational and developmental support of children. A user- and needs-oriented design of spaces, such as in a daycare center, can thus have a sustainably positive effect on the early childhood development process. Matthias Wilk, an architect himself and long involved in the fields of space, early childhood education, and daycare, examines the significance attributed to buildings within architecture as well as educational and social sciences, and the awareness of this among the architects involved in planning and the educational professionals and decision-makers. He particularly highlights the loss of early educational competence in the planning and equipping of daycare centers. As a result, the author designs functional modules for the transdisciplinary expansion of competencies among the involved professional groups, thus making a valuable contribution to the systematic quality improvement of educational buildings for young children.
