Victor Hugo undertook two journeys along the Rhine in his lifetime, in 1839 and 1840. He captured his impressions in his prose work "Le rhin." In it, he not only describes the region of legends, fairy tales, and ruins that the Rhine represented for him since childhood, but he also addresses its political significance as a border river between France and Germany. Over 100 drawings of the Rhine were created both on-site and from memory, as Hugo was also a gifted artist. Recently, he has been recognized as an artist of the early modern period alongside William Turner and Gustave Moreau, thanks to his fantastic, magical works. This volume presents excerpts from the text in a new translation, along with Hugo's most beautiful Rhine drawings and contemporary photographs.
