Adolf Muschg retells the old story of Parzival and the Grail in a new way. His novel follows the epic of Wolfram von Eschenbach, while also diverging from it. Muschg's Parzival is a very different Parzival from the one we think we know. Indeed, not only does the name of the Red Knight point to this, but the entire hundredfold cast of characters is present: the Grail and Arthur legends, the fairy tales, myths, and fables. The story draws on the rich and traditional material, yet does so freely and with confidence.
