At the end of the 18th century, the Bernese pastor Johann David Wyss wrote an adventure story subtitled "Characterization of My Children. In a Robinsonade." It tells the tale of a family's shipwreck, where they find themselves stranded on an uninhabited island and attempt to survive against the wilderness. They build a treehouse, engage in hunting, fishing, and livestock farming, thus cultivating nature—thanks to the father's craftsmanship and botanical knowledge, which provide opportunities for him to pass on his wisdom to his sons amidst the challenges of island life. The story, originally written for the private use and education of his four sons, was published by his son Johann Rudolf Wyss in the years 1812/13 and 1826/27 under the title "The Swiss Robinson or the Shipwrecked Swiss.".
