The volume examines the role of the state in the field of internal security and the relationship between state and society in light of the significant increase in the importance of individual safety from crime and threats in recent years. To what extent is the state involved in addressing these new security needs? How does it respond to them? Does it withdraw, govern from a distance, or is the field of security production particularly attractive to state actors? The contributions in this edited volume explore these questions from various disciplinary perspectives. They consider both diverse current aspects of development as well as the changes that have occurred over the past two to three decades.
