Product details

Translated by Frank Günther with an essay by Günter Walch. "We are made of the stuff that dreams are made of" - arguably the most famous line from "The Tempest," that contemplative comedy from Shakespeare's final period, which has celebrated a glorious revival in recent years through various new productions. The play thrives on its main character, the wizard Prospero, who is unlike any other figure in Shakespeare, resembling a true Superman. Right at the beginning, the great storm, conjured by Prospero's own magical powers, causes Alonso, the King of Naples, and Antonio, the Duke of Milan, along with their entourage, to shipwreck and end up on a deserted island. Twelve years earlier, Prospero had been the Duke of Milan himself but was overthrown by his scheming brother Antonio and cast onto that very island with his daughter Miranda.
