Investigations based on a tattoo on the upper left arm and facial bruising reveal the true identity of the dead man: He is Dr. Gerhard Bast, born 1911, SS-Sturmbannführer, member of the Gestapo, wanted for war crimes. Over half a century later Martin Pollack travels to South Tyrol to investigate the circumstances of this death. His report traces with tremendous intensity a human being, a life that was determined by violence and ended by violence.
