As a young man, he accompanied James Cook on his second voyage around the world. As a revolutionary, he co-proclaimed the Mainz Republic and organized the defense of the besieged city from revolutionary Paris. It’s no wonder that, with this background of experience, he viewed the world differently than his contemporaries. He met an early death in Paris, succumbing to illness while the terror of the guillotines raged around him.
