Product details
Sigmund Freud's study on "Jokes and Their Relation to the Unconscious" was created in 1905 in connection with his "Interpretation of Dreams," published five years earlier. The aim of the study is, according to Freud, to uncover the source of pleasure in humor. In three parts, Freud first analyzes the rhetorical technique and the thematic tendency of jokes, then turns to the pleasure mechanism of jokes and their function as a social event. In the final part, Freud establishes the relationship between jokes and dreams, and thus with the unconscious, leading to the insight that the pleasure derived from humor arises from saved emotional effort.
