Product details

The novel "The Tenth Brother" (Deseti brat) is the first novel written in Slovenian in modern times. Through various human destinies, we encounter the feudal and the awakening bourgeois world on one hand, and the rural structure in a temporally displaced narrative on the other. It reflects the emerging intellectuality that rubs against and nearly breaks under the weight of rural reality. The easily readable love story, interspersed with elements of a crime story, captures the spirit of the time. The weaknesses attributed to its narrative structure do not diminish the enthusiasm and acceptance of the novel at the time of its release. The readability is particularly enhanced by the humorous descriptions of the village oddball Krjavelj. The tenth brother serves as a connecting element between the rural and urban worlds in the novel. Does he succeed in this? The novel was first published in 1866 as a supplement to the Südsteirische Post, translated by Ludwig Vipauc. This translation formed the basis for the edited edition of the novel by Ferdinand Kolednik published by Habbel in Regensburg in 1960. It is also worth noting that these translations are valuable from today's perspective, as they were created close to the time of the novel's inception and often capture the spirit of this literature more deeply, illuminating the mood of that era, with only slight adjustments made to the orthography to align with contemporary reading habits.
