Product details

Walt Whitman (1819-1892) is considered the most significant American poet of the 19th century. He is primarily known to German-speaking audiences through his poetry collection "Leaves of Grass." Aside from this poetic work, Whitman's political essays have rarely been recognized in the German-speaking world. However, their enduring significance for American self-understanding is evident in the fact that influential American cultural critics like Benjamin Barber and Richard Rorty still reference this body of essays today. For these authors, it represents a vision of a better, more liberal, and gentler America.

Walt Whitman's "Democratic Vistas," published in 1871, forms the core of this political essay collection. This essay is being presented here for the first time in a long while in a new German translation, aiming to give a powerful voice to a "different America."

Walt Whitman was born on May 31, 1819, in West Hills on Long Island. He grew up in Brooklyn and worked as a teacher, carpenter, bookseller, journalist, and editor of various magazines in Brooklyn and New York after completing an apprenticeship in printing. His travels took him to the Midwest and the South of the United States. In 1848, he lived for a short time in New Orleans. In 1855, Whitman published his first 12 poems in New York in a poetry collection titled "Leaves of Grass." Over the next three and a half decades, he continuously revised and expanded the collection, and by the last edition of "Leaves of Grass" in 1891/92, the number of poems had grown to nearly 400. "Leaves of Grass" is Whitman's main work. During the American Civil War (1861-1865), Whitman worked as a volunteer nurse in military hospitals in New York and Washington D.C., where he settled in 1865. After the war, he processed his experiences in socially and culturally critical essays. In 1873, he moved to Camden, New Jersey, where he died on March 26, 1892.
