Product details
In 1806, Placidus Spescha dedicated his description of the Val Tujetsch to none other than the French Emperor Napoleon. Ambitious plans constantly motivated the priest, who was originally from Trun. He envisioned a utopian settlement in the shape of a giant rhombus on the plateau near Sedrun, designed to protect the population from avalanches and fire. Unlike the settlement project, some of Spescha's ideas were later realized in one form or another. His efforts to improve the health of the population, particularly for young children, have remained relatively unknown until now. Reading his description of the Val Tujetsch reveals astonishing insights and demands respect for the living conditions of that time. The text, edited by Ursula Scholian Izeti, is a treasure trove of geographical, historical, and ethnological information about the valley and the municipality of Tujetsch. Photographer Lucia Degonda provides a counterpoint to Placidus Spescha's 200-year-old description with portraits of people from Tujetsch. "In the first section, I described the geographical, in the second the historical, and in the third the political situation of the valley Tawätsch, and overall, I aimed to create an economic work that would promote the happiness of people in general, and particularly that of the inhabitants of Tawätsch.".
