Design is a relatively young discipline. It established its theoretical independence in distinction from art and craft. Today, the field has diversified: the guiding ideas are no longer limited to practical utility and notions of beauty; ecology and justice, as well as the potentials of irony, play, and humor, have also found their way into design theory.
